Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
In order for anything to be cleansed it first has to be dirty. Well that’s how everyone was before they accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Through God’s undeserved mercy we have been sanctified and cleansed from all our sins. When you are cleansed you are made pure. From all the hurt that you previously had to the grudges that ruled your heart they will all be washed away by the grace of God.
Being cleansed is not just washing away dirt that is visible to everyone but even the secreted place has to be washed. There are things that people do in the darkest of places where they think nobody can see them but they forget that God can see everything. That is why when you confess your sins you need to honestly tell God everything. Jesus has promised us that if we confess Him before men, He will also confess us before His Father which is in heaven. (1 Corinthians 6:11)
